What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are custom-made, tooth-shaped caps that cover teeth that are damaged, weakened or badly decayed. By restoring the tooth’s shape, size and strength, a crown looks natural and lets you bite and chew comfortably again.
Dental bridges work in a similar way but close the gap left by a missing tooth: two crowns on the neighbouring teeth hold an artificial tooth in between — a non-surgical alternative to a dental implant.
Crowns can be placed on a natural tooth or on a dental implant, and come in several materials, each with its own advantages.

Why might a tooth need a crown?
The most common reason is a weakened tooth — from decay, a large filling or a fracture. A crown covers and strengthens it, protecting it from further wear or cracking that could otherwise lead to extraction.

Teeth that have had root canal treatment also usually need a crown to protect them.

Why patients choose a crown
- Protects and restores weakened teeth
- Eases tooth pain and sensitivity
- Improves the appearance of your smile
- Comfortable eating and speaking
- Easy to look after
- Long-lasting, natural-looking results
Our dental crown process
Six steps from your first check-up to a crown that fits and feels right.
Consultation
We examine the tooth, assess the damage and check nerve health. X-rays may reveal hidden issues and confirm whether a crown is right for you.
Tooth preparation
Any decay is removed and the tooth is filled if needed, then reshaped to make room for the crown. We take a precise digital impression.
Crown design
With CAD/CAM technology we build a 3D model of your tooth to perfect the shape, size and bite before production.
Milling & finishing
Your crown is milled from a solid ceramic block for strength, then hand-finished and glazed for a natural look.
Fitting
We try the crown in to check the fit and colour match. Once you approve it, it is permanently cemented in place.
Review & adjustment
About a week later we check your bite and the crown’s stability, and fine-tune anything needed for comfort.

Paul LDental crowns — your questions
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth, mainly to improve its appearance. A crown covers the whole tooth, so it also restores strength — the better choice for teeth weakened by decay, large fillings, fractures or root canal treatment.
Which crown material is right for me?
Zirconia (such as Katana or Lava 3M) is very strong and suits back teeth; pressed ceramic (Emax) offers more translucency for front teeth. Your dentist recommends a material after examining your tooth, bite and smile goals.
Can a crown be placed on a dental implant?
Yes. A crown can sit on a natural tooth or on a dental implant that replaces a missing tooth’s root. We also make bridges, where crowns on neighbouring teeth support a replacement tooth.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic before it is prepared, so most patients feel only pressure. Some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal and settles on its own.
How do I look after my crown?
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep regular check-ups, just as with natural teeth. Avoid biting very hard objects. Your written treatment plan sets out the warranty that applies to your crown.
